Shopping and eating are national past-times in Singapore. New residents are often
swept away with the wide choice of goods, services and fashion available downtown
and in housing estates. Orchard Road will keep you busy for hours, while the
best bargains are often found in the suburban housing estates.
Groceries
Many supermarkets carry a wide range of Asian, American, Continental
and Middle Eastern groceries.
Need something special for your next house party? You can find
it at Cold Storage or Jason's. Specialty wine merchants, Japanese foods, freshly
made Italian pasta are all available in Singapore.
Singapore's ethnic communities are reflected in the abundance
of Chinese, Malay and Indian herbs and spices that add taste and colour to
locally-inspired cuisine.
For competitively-priced groceries, try the NTUC supermarkets.
Many housing estates include a wet market where you can buy your fresh produce,
meats, and dried foodstuff. Produce and meats sold in the wet markets won't
be packaged, but they are just as fresh, if not fresher than most places.
Furniture
For high quality furniture you need to go downtown or to the
many antique and ethnic furniture shops which you will find all over the island.
Specialty magazines which focus on interior decorating are readily available
in newsstands.
For the budget conscious, neighbourhood furniture shops, once
again, found among housing estates, provide a varying range of furniture to
meet a limited budget.
Clothing
This is where Singapore really shines! Every major haute couture
brand and international fashion label is available.
Singapore also boasts locally-designed and reasonably-priced
house brands, available in the city and at suburban shopping malls at Tampines
and Yishun.
Custom men's and women's tailors cater to every cut. Some departmental stores
to check out here include Robinsons, Takashimaya and Tangs, all conveniently
located along the Orchard Road belt.
